Description

Hydroxycarbamide, also known as hydroxyurea, is a medication used in sickle-cell disease, chronic myelogenous leukemia, cervical cancer, and polycythemia vera.

DEFINITION
N-Hydroxyurea
Content: 97.5 per cent to 102.0 per cent (anhydrous substance).

CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder, hygroscopic.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, practically insoluble in alcohol. It shows polymorphism.

IDENTIFICATION
A. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
B. Examine the chromatograms obtained in the test for urea.

TESTS
Urea: Thin-layer chromatography.
Chlorides: Maximum 50 ppm.
Heavy metals: Maximum 10 ppm.
Water:  Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 2.00 g.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.

Hydroxyurea [127-07-1].
Hydroxyurea contains not less than 97.0 percent and not more than 103.0 percent of CH4N2O2, calculated on the dried basis.

Identification: Infrared Absorption 197K.
Loss on drying: Dry it in vacuum at 60 for 3 hours: it loses not more than 1.0% of its weight.
Residue on ignition: not more than 0.50%.
Heavy metals: not more than 0.003%.
Urea and related compounds: To pass the test.
